Hi I’m Cindy

Well it’s been a little while and I thought it was time to introduce myself again to everyone. So I’m Cindy from Sunbird Lingerie. I’m the business owner, creative designer, seamstress and all of the other hats you wear running a small business. I’m so lucky to be working in a field I love and feel so passionate about. Sunbird Lingerie launched in 2018, however I have enjoyed the lingerie industry for over 25 years. During that time I have continued to evolve and consistently challenge myself learning new skills. Whether it’s lingerie making, bra fitting or more recently marketing, I have lots of ideas to improve.

Why I started making lingerie

It all started from a need to find comfortable cotton underwear for myself as I worked in Noosa in very hot conditions. The struggle was real so I decided to make my own bra! I thought how hard could it be right? Well six months later, lots of trials and late nights and I had completed my first bra. Turns out making a bra is an acquired skill set and one I’m very proud to have mastered.

In my spare time

When I’m not creating new bra and undie collections you can find me in the kitchen cooking up a storm or enjoying time in my Australian native garden. I love shades of pink and the smell of fresh flowers. Hydrangeas are my favourite. I’m constantly inspired by unique fabrics and beautiful colours that surround our everyday. I have a soft spot for the resident butcher birds, magpies and parrots that I’m so privileged to share my garden with. Classical music is always playing whilst sewing in my studio.

My superpower

My superpower is shoe shopping! I have a true size 5 foot and have spent a lifetime refining the art of finding pretty shoes. Having a tiny foot is not always glamorous or practical. I can often be found in the children’s shoe section. I think I was destined to create custom made lingerie, I have a unique perspective for anyone who’s anything but a regular size.

My true passion

Is lingerie, I see inspiration everywhere and it’s easy to loose precious time searching for new season fabrics. My mind is constantly full of new ways to create and design. I love to hear those words “I’ve never worn a more comfortable bra” It’s what constantly motivates me and I find it so rewarding. Underwire Bra Problems

Underwire bras can be a game-changer for support and shaping, but they can also come with their fair share of frustrations. If you’ve ever dealt with discomfort, poking wires, or an ill-fitting band, you’re not alone! Here, we’ll explore some common underwire bra problems and how to solve them.

Underwire Bra Problem #1

The Underwire is Digging In

A digging underwire can make wearing a bra unbearable. This usually happens when:

The underwire is not fitted perfectly to your body and shape. This is the first step to perfect fit and comfort. Even if every other piece of the bra fits you perfectly, if the underwire is not “your” size and shape, it will distort the fit.

Other factors to consider if an underwire is digging in:

The cup size is too small, causing the wire to press into the breast tissue.
The band is too tight, forcing the underwire to dig into your ribs.
The bra is poorly constructed and uses an underwire that does not fit your body and shape.

Solution: Ensure you’re wearing the correct cup and band size. A professional bra fitting can help. Choosing bras with smooth, flexible underwires (like the non-toxic underwires we use in our designs) can also reduce discomfort.

The Underwire is Poking Out

When the wire starts breaking through the fabric, it can jab into your skin, making your bra unwearable.

This underwire bra problem should never occur in a well-fitting and well-made bra.

Solution:

Invest in high-quality bras with reinforced stitching and durable fabric.
If the wire has already poked through, a quick fix is to sew the hole shut with strong thread or cover the area with a small piece of fabric.
Rotate your bras regularly to reduce wear and tear.
Hand washing your underwire bras will greatly reduce this underwire bra problem. I recommend Eucalan as your premium lingerie detergent.
All Sunbird Lingerie bras have a little wiggle room for the underwires, which helps avoid wire breakthroughs.

The Bra is Gaping or Not Sitting Flush

If the centre gore (the part between the cups) isn’t lying flat against your chest, or there’s gaping at the top of the cups, the fit may be off.

Solution:

If the centre gore isn’t touching your chest, try a smaller band size or a bra with a lower bridge.
If there’s extra space at the top of the cup, consider a smaller cup size or a different style that suits your breast shape better.
Opt for custom-fitted lingerie to ensure the perfect fit.

The Underwire is Uncomfortable Throughout the Day

Even if your bra fits well, some underwires feel too rigid and uncomfortable over time.

Solution:

Look for bras with soft, flexible underwires (like the French non-toxic underwires we use in our handcrafted lingerie!).
Bras with a plush fabric casing around the wire can also improve comfort.
Avoid wearing the same bra daily—give your bras time to rest and reshape.

Bra Size Chart

My secret formula for a fabulous fit is showcased in the Bra Size Chart using my special formula.

Here’s the “how to” for my bra size chart.

Measure your underbust and use this measurement to find your Sunbird Lingerie band size, crucial for using the bra size chart correctly.

Sunbird Band Size	Underbust (cm)
8	63-69
10	68-74
12	73-79
14	78-84
16	83-89

Measure your full bust to continue using this special bra-size formula.

Subtract your underbust or band measurement from your fullbust measurement. This helps in determining the right size according to my special bra size chart.

This number will indicate your cup size using my formula.

If you are in-between sizes I can help with a few more questions to determine your best size. Just send me an email. I am always here to help. Sometimes, a little bit of individual customising is the best option for a perfect fit. That’s when my bra size chart using my special formula comes into play.

I find this method gives a more accurate size, by using your measurements separately. I use this method with every bra I make, so it makes perfect sense to create a size chart using this special formula. It’s a more “true” indicator of your cup size as opposed to using general circumference measurements.

Why the change in size chart?

Due to a demand from customers for immediate delivery required, I now have some lingerie made and ready to send. This has made me re-evaluate my stand sizing. Making custom lingerie, standard sizing was not as important. But with this new demand I had to re think my best sizing method to create my stock sizes.

My new sizing reflects the method and maths I use to create my band and cup patterns.

Hello lovely readers,

I’m excited to share the story behind my passion for creating custom-made bras. It all began in the beautiful, sun-drenched town of Noosa, where I worked in rather hot and humid conditions. The heat was relentless, and comfort was essential, especially regarding undergarments.

One day, I realized that a breathable, cotton bra would be the perfect solution for my working environment. Determined to find the ideal bra, I set off on a quest. After searching high and low, I stumbled upon a stunning white Swiss cotton bra. It was everything I had dreamed of: soft, breathable, and beautifully crafted. However, there was one major downside – the price. This gorgeous bra cost half a week’s wage!

As much as I loved that bra, I simply couldn’t justify spending so much. That’s when inspiration struck. I thought, “Why not teach myself how to make cotton bras?” The idea of taking a flat piece of fabric and transforming it into something both functional and beautiful fascinated me.

The birth of my bra-making journey begins!

I embarked on a journey of discovery, learning about fabrics, sewing techniques, and the intricate art of bra construction. It wasn’t easy, so many trials and errors were made during many late nights of cutting, sewing and starting all over again. But each failure and each stitch brought me closer to creating the perfect bra. Over time, my skills improved, and I found immense joy in crafting bras that not only fit perfectly but also made me feel confident and comfortable.

This bra-making journey has been incredibly rewarding, and I’m thrilled to share my creations with you through my custom-made lingerie business. Every bra I make is a labour of love, designed with your comfort and style in mind.
